About the Ichabods

Caiti Crooks

Caiti is majoring in human services. She is from the Kansas City area. She is taking Spanish language courses at Washburn and is looking forward to practicing. She’s also interested in service.

Shelby Fehrenbacher

Shelby lives in Topeka and is majoring in psychology. She has wanted to go on the Nicaragua Service Experience trip for the last three years and was able to make it work this year.

Shelby Ferguson

Shelby is from Ottawa, Kansas and is majoring in kinesiology. She is interested in service and learning more about other cultures.

Hayley Normandin

Hayley is from Damar, Kansas and is majoring in psychology. She is part of Washburn’s LinC Scholar/Bonner Leader program and was interested in this program specifically because of the service to the community of El Limon. This will be her first time on an airplane and her first chance to see the ocean.

Samuel Olberding

Samuel is from Centralia, Kansas and is majoring in accounting. He has always wanted to study abroad and heard about this opportunity and the chance to stay with families from friends.

Carmela Remboldt

Carmela learned about the Nicaragua Service Experience from a poster in a hallway last spring and has been ready to go ever since. She is from Topeka and majoring in business management.

Jessica Rubio

Jessica is from Tonganoxie, Kansas and is majoring in biology. Her older sister went on the Nicaragua Service Experience a few years ago and told her she had to go! She’s looking forward to practicing her Spanish and the chance to experience another life in Nicaragua.

Michaela Saunders

Michaela works in the Office of University Relations at Washburn University. She will serve as a guide and chaperone. She went on the 2014 trip and documented the experience as the primary author of this blog.

Rachel Bieker is a sophomore majoring in biology, pre-med. She is from Rossville, Kan. If you’re on campus, you may see Rachel giving a tour to prospective students. She works as a campus ambassador.

Travis Bussen already has earned a bachelor of criminal justice degree from Washburn. He’s got just a few semesters left for a bachelor in psychology. He is from Cummings, Kan. Travis is a veteran. Suzie, his girlfriend, talks about Nicaragua so often he had to see it for himself.

Kathryn “Katy” Davis is a junior from Andover, Kan. She is a double major in Spanish and biology. She is the group’s only Spanish speaker an is looking forward to being immersed in the language. Katy volunteers with North American animals at the Topeka Zoo and hopes to become a zoo keeper.

Richard B. “Rick” Ellis is the director of the Center for Community and Civic Engagement at Washburn University. He was instrumental in establishing Washburn’s partnership with ProNica and has traveled on five of the six prior service trips to Nicaragua. He always wears cowboy boots.

Suzie Fields is a senior majoring in psychology. She is from Cummings, Kan. This is Suzie’s third trip to Nicaragua with LinC. She considers the people we will see to be her second family an isn’t sure what she’ll do when she can’t go on next year’s trip. Suzie talks about Nicaragua so much that her boyfriend, Travis, had to come along.

Samantha “Sam” Finley is a senior majoring in nursing. She is from Shawnee, Kan. Sam is good friends with Jenna and Laura, who have filled her in on all class meetings because her required clinical experience occurred at the same time as our meetings.

Jenna Frick is a senior majoring in biochemistry and education. She plans to work as a chemistry teacher. Jenna is from Kansas City, Kan. She serves on the Washburn Student Government Association and recently tied for first place in the bi-annual Nall Speak Off public speaking competition at Washburn.

Deanna Goracke is a senior majoring in human services. She is from Williamsburg. Nathan Robertson is the second-oldest of her five children. She discovered the Nicaragua program first, but said she is thrilled to be sharing the adventure with Nathan.

Meghan McGuire is a senior majoring in human services. She is from Atchison, Kan. Meghan transferred to Washburn and says she fell in love with the human services field during an introductory class.

Katarzyna “Kasia” Potocka is a senior majoring in human services. Originally from Warsaw, Poland, she lives in Lawrence, Kan. She has traveled extensively in Europe but has never been to Central America.

Ashonte Tell is a freshman majoring in biology. She is from Topeka. She loves to travel and has been to France, China and Mexico. She says she’s “NEVER on time.”
